For countless people and for countless years, Bilquis Bano Edhi had been a mother, especially for the orphans at the Edhi Foundation orphanage that she established with her late husband, the humanitarian and philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi. On April 15, 2022, all these people and many more who worked or were supported by the Edhi Foundation, lost that mother, whom they all called ‘Bari Amma’. Bilqees Edhi was a mother countless children looked up to as their own. I met this dynamic lady at her orphanage in 2008, and talked to her about motherhood, the motherless and her own mother. Here is my report of the visit and my impressions of this selfless woman and the beautiful children who got a second lease on life thanks to her.
Thank you for the music, ABBA! By the time I discovered and fell in love with ABBA and their music, they had already split up. But, thankfully, they had belted out so many memorable pop songs by then that it kept me dancing on their tunes all through adolescent and teens. Now after almost 40 years, the Swedish pop band have reunited for one last time, releasing their 9th studio album — Voyage — “and they plan to unveil digital avatars — dubbed ‘ABBAtars’ — at a concert in London in May,…
There have been many superheroes since the pandemic hit the world. Among them are teachers who worked harder than ever at their job in a totally new ‘online’ setting, turned to new methods of teaching, overcome its challenges, and then stir their students through the unfamiliar world of online classes.
Bas, bohat hogaya! This has to stop now, and it can only stop when swift punishment of the highest degree is given to these monsters who treat their women as trash and crush them ruthlessly. And each time it happens, many people are more interested in knowing what the woman did to drive the man to this brutality and then there are also justifications of the guy being a drug addict, or mentally unstable or a ‘girat-mand’ who was driven to it by a twisted sense of honour. NO WOMAN…
The demise of Haseena Moin brought not just end of the golden era of TV plays in Pakistan, but it also reflects that much in her plays that were part of the urban middleclass society has also been lost along the way.
While there is much talk about women’s rights and the status of women in our society, there has been little change in the conditions faced by women. This makes it imperative that the importance of days such as International Women’s Day needs to be highlighted until things actually improve.
With schools reopening and some students going back to school, what we should focus on is what to do and how to learn to live well in such a situation.
Memories, nostalgia and a personal account … Each year at this time, nostalgia consumes me totally. I start reliving my haj experience, reminiscing what I had gone through and how countless souls from all over the world go through the same rituals each year. The haj is a totally consuming experience – physically, mentally and spiritually. And to me, it is the most exciting spiritual adventure one can experience. I use the word ‘adventure’ because of the nature of what has to be accomplished, the tasking mental and physical…
I am what I am, all because of my father. He inspired me with stories of strong women, let me forge my own own path, and his love taught me to love myself with all my flaws and finesse.

This Eidul Fitr under the shadow of Covid-19 is a lonely and sad one for most people, but let us celebrate what we have rather than miss what we can’t have
A mother is all giving and she rarely asks for anything, except that all her family stays happy and healthy. Stay happy, stay positive and stay connected to your mother during this Covid-19 pandemic.
The world has changed forever in these last few weeks. And when this is all over, we would also have changed in so many ways — the way we do things, the way we look at things and the way we take all small and important things in life. These weeks and the weeks ahead of social distancing due to COVID-19 appear daunting and depressing. There are more questions than there are answers. Few people are sure of what to do, but there is no doubt that staying at home…

While structures can be rebuilt and fauna regrown, the loss of human and animal life is a tragedy beyond recovery Bush fires in Australia have been going on since September 2019 and there is no end in sight. As of January 8, 2020, 26 people were confirmed dead in the bush fires that burned more than 12 million acres, destroyed 5,900 buildings, with more than 2300 homes…
This koala mum and her joey were among the lucky ones rescued from the bush fires in Australia. (Photo: Darren/Jimboomba Police, via Facebook) A large area of the 1,700-square mile Kangaroo Island — lying southwest of Adelaide, off the mainland of South Australia — is protected as nature reserves that boasted a number of extremely rare and localised fauna and flora in Australia. But this was before bush fires consumed an estimated 600 square miles, or one third, of the island, according to NASA. According to official figures, the fires…
